A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Orega Users Switching from SMS or SafeID Token
If you’ve received this guide, you’re currently using SMS or a SafeID token to complete two-factor authentication (2FA) when signing in to Microsoft services like Outlook.
Orega has decided to move away from these methods and adopt the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app. This change will enhance security while streamlining the login process.
Not sure how to set it up? We’ve got you.
You may already have the app on your phone. If not, follow the steps below:
Open the App Store
Search for Microsoft Authenticator
Download and install the app
Open the Google Play Store
Search for Microsoft Authenticator
Download and install the app
🔍 Tip: You can also scan the QR code provided in your setup email to go straight to the app.

You’ll be asked to enter a 6-digit code from your existing 2FA method (SMS or SafeID token).
Once logged in, you’ll see your Security Info page.
Click on “Add sign-in method”
Choose “Authenticator app” from the dropdown
Click “Add”
You’ll be prompted to install the app, you’ve already done this, so just click “Next” twice.
A QR code will appear on your computer screen.
Now switch to your mobile:
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app
Tap the + (plus icon) in the top right
Select “Work or school account”
Choose “Scan QR code”
Point your phone at the QR code on your computer screen
Once scanned, your device will link with your Microsoft account.
Your phone will now prompt you to enter a number.
That number will appear on your computer screen. Enter it on your phone and tap “Yes”.
Then click “Next” on your computer screen. That’s it - you’re done.
Your Microsoft Authenticator app is now active.

If you get a new phone, you'll need to set up Microsoft Authenticator again. Before changing phones, it's recommended to use the backup feature in the app settings. If you've already switched phones without backing up, contact Silver Lining Support, who can help reset your authentication methods.
Yes! Microsoft Authenticator generates codes locally on your device, so it works even without an internet connection. The time-based codes will continue to refresh every 30 seconds regardless of connectivity.
Absolutely. SMS verification codes can potentially be intercepted through SIM swapping attacks or telecommunication vulnerabilities. Microsoft Authenticator generates codes directly on your device, eliminating the transmission risk.
Yes, Microsoft Authenticator works with personal Microsoft accounts, as well as many other services like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and any service that supports standard authenticator apps (TOTP).
You can add virtually unlimited accounts to the Microsoft Authenticator app. The app organises them alphabetically, making it easy to find the account you need.
If your phone is lost or stolen, contact Orega Head Office or Silver Lining Support immediately. They can temporarily disable your authenticator requirement and help you set up a new device. This is why it's important to have alternative verification methods registered on your account.
Microsoft Authenticator uses minimal battery and system resources. It only actively consumes power when you open the app to get a code or when you receive a verification notification.
Yes, Microsoft Authenticator is a second factor ("something you have") that works alongside your password ("something you know"). You'll still need to enter your password first, then use the authenticator app.
