ISDN PTSN Switch Off

What Is The PSTN Switch Off About?

By 2025, the traditional copper-based PSTN and ISDN network will be completely deactivated, marking a significant milestone in the world's shift towards fully digital networks.

The switch off is set to affect both business and home phone lines along with other non-voice services such as alarms, CCTV systems and EPOS machines. This means existing infrastructure and hardware connected to both PSTN and ISDN lines will no longer function

Instead, these will be replaced with software which can use Internet Protocol (IP) technology which can transmit voice in a digital format using a broadband connection when you make or receive a phone call.

PSTN and ISDN have been the backbone of the UK’s phone network for decades. As the lines have stayed the same, the technology around them has evolved and advanced, making them outdated. PSTN is the copper wire-based telephone network, which has remained unchanged since the beginning of the telephone network. ISDN, however, came into existence in the 1980s, which at the time provided an improvement. However, broadband internet connection speeds are much faster and at a higher level than ISDN.

With this, it is evident that both PSTN and ISDN need the ability to compete and offer the ability to be flexible. With many businesses still being tied to physical locations, they also have shifted to cloud-based technology, which is scalable and flexible, meaning ISDN just won’t be able to help assist with this.
At some point before 2025, you will need to make the switch from ISDN or PSTN to the latest IP technology. Reviewing your current infrastructure in due course is important to ensure you are fully prepared to run your communications on a digital network.

Everyone must upgrade their traditional telephone lines to an internet-based or hosted VoIP phone system. This one can support SIP trunks that allow you to make calls using a data connection link or shift your communication to a fully cloud-hosted system.
To put it simply, VoIP leverages a company's existing internet connection to transfer voice calls. Initially, this solution was perceived as risky due to its complete reliance on internet connectivity for ensuring stable calls.

Currently, most broadband speeds are sufficient to overcome any call quality issues. VoIP telephony is simpler than it may appear and requires less hardware than traditional systems.
Before making the switch, it is essential to outline your business needs and key features you expect from your new phone system. Next, it is key to research to evaluate providers to see which ones are suitable for you.
